Botox® Therapy

BOTOX® (botulinum toxin) injections are the best known of a group of medications that use various forms of botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze muscle activity. Because muscles can be relaxed using Botox, it is valuable for managing chronic pain such as headaches from TMJ disorder or chronic migraine headaches.

At Brush Rinse Floss, we treat chronic pain due to dental concerns with Botox. Approved by the FDA in 2010 for use as a treatment for migraine headaches, there are very few risks associated with Botox therapy when used as a treatment for chronic pain. Injections allow for very specifically located treatment, once the origin of pain is located. For migraine headache pain management, Botox injections should be divided across 7 specific head/neck muscle areas and repeated every 12 weeks.

Potential risks after Botox injections include:

  • Muscles injected can be sore for a few days.
  • Botox may cause temporary partial weakening of the injected muscles.
  • When Botox is used for an extended period, it may cause atrophy of the muscles injected which is reversible upon stopping the treatment.
  • There have been reports of temporary side effects such as flu-like symptoms, palpitations, tingling sensations, or nausea. These side effects are rare and usually go away within 1-2 days.

There are other dental conditions for which Botox may be an effective treatment. As with all medical and dental conditions, it’s vital that you discuss symptoms and possible treatments with your provider at Brush Rinse Floss. We are qualified specialists who will advise you on the proper course of treatment. Contact us to learn more about Botox therapy, or to schedule an appointment today.
