Wisdom Tooth Removal

While extraction of wisdom teeth is similar to other tooth removals, there are some aspects that make this surgical procedure different. Primarily, the timing of removal is a critical element in determining when wisdom teeth extraction should occur.

At Brush Rinse Floss, our qualified dentists recommend wisdom tooth removal before the roots have fully formed. Most often, young people between the ages of 15 and 18 are the best candidates. During this time, teeth roots are still forming, thus making the removal of wisdom teeth easier than later in the maturation process, when roots are firmly embedded in the jaw. Planning for wisdom teeth removal during summer vacation simplifies the time needed for recovery, and prevents students missing school.

Once the decision for removal is made, a Brush Rinse Floss team member will schedule your appointment with one of our oral surgeons. Consultation with your provider should include discussion about what type of sedation will be used (local or IV), the recovery timeline, and what you can and cannot do while recovering. You will receive qualified guidance on how to eat and perform other activities following the procedure to minimize risks that may lead to complications.

Post-surgery guidelines including the following:

  • Rest is essential, so plan on relaxing for a minimum of 3 days after surgery.
  • Limit food intake to liquids in the first 24 hours and soft foods (yogurt, applesauce) for the subsequent 48 hours
  • No straws, sucking, or swishing of liquids, or teeth brushing, for 3 days
  • Keep your head elevated for the first 3 days after surgery to assist in the healing process
  • Don’t dislodge the blood clot that may develop in your socket. Doing so can delay healing and risk the development of a dry socket — a painful and recovery-delaying circumstance.
  • Placing ice packs on your jaw or cheek can ease post-surgical discomfort.
  • Pain relievers – take prescribed pain relievers in moderation

If pain is excessive for more than a day after extraction, if fever or chills develop, if pus develops around socket, or excessive bleeding occurs, call your trusted Brush Rinse Floss provider for assistance or an emergency visit.
